This song was inspired by the following story:
Long ago, in the town of Apt, there lived a poor man who worked tirelessly from morning until night. He chopped wood, carried water, and ran errands for the townsfolk, yet no matter how hard he labored, his pockets were always empty. His children often went to bed hungry, and his heart was weighed down with sorrow.
One day, in his despair, he decided to seek counsel from the holy Avraham Yehoshua Heshel of Apt, the great Apter Rebbe, renowned for his wisdom and compassion. With trembling voice, the poor man poured out his heart:
“Rebbe, I do not understand. I work more than anyone, yet my family lacks bread. Tell me, where does blessing come from in this world?”
The Apter Rebbe listened intently, his eyes shining with kindness. Then he said:
“My dear son, know this truth: the source of all blessing is Shabbes. All the prosperity and joy that a Jew can receive during the week flows from the holiness of Shabbes. When you honor Shabbes, you open the gates of Heaven.”
The poor man protested:
“But Rebbe, how can I honor Shabbes when I have no money for candles, challah, or wine?”
The Apter Rebbe leaned closer and replied with gentle firmness:
“Do your best. Even if you have only one small candle, light it with joy. Even if your challah is but a crust of bread, set it upon the table with song. What matters is not the grandeur, but the heart with which you honor Shabbes. If you sanctify Shabbes, you will see blessings descend upon your home.”
Encouraged, the poor man returned. That week, though he had barely a few coins, he saved them to buy a candle. As Shabbes arrived, he lit it with devotion, sang the zemiros with his children, and welcomed the holy day with joy despite the emptiness of his table.
From that Shabbes onward, his fortune began to change. People began to treat him kindly, new opportunities for work arose, and his earnings stretched farther than before. Slowly, his debts diminished, and peace returned to his household.
When he next visited the Apter Rebbe, tears of gratitude filled his eyes.
“Rebbe,” he said, “I see it now with my own eyes: Shabbes is truly the source of all blessing. Even in my poverty, when I honored it with joy, Heaven poured abundance into my life.”
The Apter Rebbe smiled warmly and replied:
“Yes, my son. Remember always: blessing does not come only from toil, but from the holiness of Shabbes, which sustains and blesses the entire week.”
From that day forward, the poor man became not only faithful in his Shabbes observance, but also generous to others, sharing his newfound blessings so that they too could taste the sweetness of Shabbes.
