The prayer "Hayom T'amtzeini" is a part of the Rosh Hashanah davening, recited at the conclusion of the Mussaf service. It is traditionally said just before the final Shofar blasts and marks the culmination of the High Holy Days prayers. The full text of the prayer is a plea for strength and assistance in facing the challenges of the coming year.
The words of the prayer are as follows:
"היום תאמְצֵנִי"
"Hayom T'amtzeini"
"Today, strengthen me"
It is a prayer for strength and spiritual renewal, acknowledging that the Day of Judgment is concluding, but also recognizing the need for continued divine help.
This prayer has profound significance as it expresses the themes of personal reflection, the desire for self-improvement, and the need for God's aid throughout the coming year. The request for "strength" is often understood as a metaphor for resilience in facing life's trials.
The song was inspired by the following story:
There was once a young boy who came to shul on the holiest of days. All around him, men swayed in prayer, their lips moving quickly, words flowing from the siddur. But the boy did not even know the Alef-Beis. He had no words to say, no pages he could read. His heart ached, and tears filled his eyes.
“If I cannot pray with words,” he thought, “I will pray with my heart.” And so he began to cry. At first softly, then with sobs that shook his small body. Those tears rose up like a prayer, straight from the depth of his soul.
When the long tefila finally ended, the boy could no longer sit still. He began to clap his hands and dance with all his strength. Something in his pure cry and joyful clapping lit a fire in the hearts of the people around him. One by one, they joined him. Soon the entire shul had gathered into a great ring, hands clapping, feet stamping, voices lifting. Together they danced and sang “Hayom Te’amitzēni — Today, strengthen me!”
In that circle, everyone felt it: the child who had no letters had opened the gates of Heaven. His tears had become his Alef-Beis, his clapping his tefila, his dancing his connection to Hashem. And in that moment — right before the last shofar blast — they all believed with certainty that their prayers had been accepted.
