Israel: Bennett Intends To Form Unity Government With Opposition Leader Yair Lapid
Yamina right-wing alliance leader Naftali Bennett announced on Sunday from Jerusalem that he will seek to form a unity government with opposition leader Yair Lapid.
If the new coalition is successful, Israel's longest-serving leader, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, would lose his seat again after 12 years. Bennett stressed that "all parties are invited to join the coalition." "Instead of managing and leading, the usual way is to turn the fire out and to disperse hatred and polarisation between the people in the country in order to cover for the failure," he concluded.
Israeli president Reuven Rivlin picked up opposition leader Yair Lapid to form the next cabinet several weeks ago.
The decision came after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was not able to form a government following the fourth general election in two years.
