Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Naftali Bennett of “misleading the public” after the Yamina right-wing alliance leader announced that he would seek to form a unity government with opposition leader Yair Lapid.
“This government is a threat to the security of Israel and to the future of this country,” Netanyahu declared from Jerusalem on Sunday as Israel's longest-serving leader faces losing his seat if the coalition is successful.
"How are we going to be perceived in the eyes of our enemies? What are they going to say in Iran? What are they going to say in Gaza? What will they do in Iran and in Gaza? What are they going to say in Washington,” Netanyahu mused.
Israeli president Reuven Rivlin picked up opposition leader Yair Lapid to form the next cabinet several weeks ago.
The decision came after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was not able to form a government following the fourth general election in two years.
