Thousands of Brood X cicadas came out to surface after living and mating underground for 17 years, as seen on Tuesday in Washington DC.
Seventeen-year periodical cicada nymphs of eastern North America emerge between late April and early June to mate producing a noise of up to 110 decibels.
Brood X cicadas began to emerge in billions across 15 states in the eastern half of the United States, including Maryland.
