In this Dvar Torah Jeremy Gimpel reflects on the Torah portions of Terumah and Tetzaveh. He explores the powerful phrase from the Book of Exodus: “wise-hearted.” As Bnei Yisrael build the Mishkan (Tabernacle), the Torah doesn’t call them skilled artisans or brilliant minds — it calls them chachmei lev, people of wise hearts.
What does it mean to have a wise heart?
Drawing from Rashi, Ramban, Sforno, and Midrash, Jeremy uncovers a timeless message: true wisdom is not just intellectual achievement, it is a heart attuned to Heaven. It is the ability to live with Godly intuition, to bridge Torah from the head into the heart.
He also examines the moment when King Solomon, before building the Temple, asks not for wealth or power — but for a “listening heart” (I Kings 3:9). That request became the foundation of his greatness and the blueprint for spiritual leadership.
In a world overflowing with information, noise, and opinion, perhaps what we need most is not more knowledge — but wiser hearts.
If the goal of the Tabernacle was to create a dwelling place for Hashem, the deeper message is this: the ultimate Mishkan is within us.
