This year’s Modzitzer Sukkos kumzitz brought great joy to the participants through the legendary musical repertoire of the Modzitz community. This year, the kumzitz was hosted by Rabbi Dovid Bick, as his musical partner, Rabbi Aaron Orlander, was spending Sukkos in Eretz Yisroel. Rabbi Bick, whose possesses expert knowledge of the Modzitzer repertoire, skillfully led the singing. This year’s kumzitz featured many lesser-known pieces from the Modzitz canon, which Rabbi Bick introduced with short explanations of the nigun. These pieces were balanced out by well-loved nigunim that appeared on the recordings of R’ Ben Zion Shenker, and are now considered classics of the repertoire. Ben Zion Shenker’s music was heard throughout the night as well, including two pieces played on the guitar by Dr. Gordon Dale—Shenker’s famous settings of Mechalkel Chayim and Kel Adon—with which the crowd sang enthusiastically. As always, R’ Dov Lenchevsky’s piano accompaniment was skillful and artistic, adding a beautiful harmonic foundation to the kumzitz. Several pieces were led by Rabbi Mordechai Steinwurzel, whose deep knowledge of Modzitzer nigunim shined through. The kumzitz was a great success and left everyone feeling inspired and uplifted.
