This week's idea for Turning Friday into Erev Shabbos
Our parsha begins vayehi bayom ha'shemini, and it was on the 8th day. The Imrei Chaim points out that vayehi always connotes something sad. What is it referring to here? He explains that each week, Shabbos enables us to reset our lives, to have a fresh start and a new beginning. By thinking about what we need to improve from the previous week and committing to the week ahead, we get to start again. That is why Sunday is called yom rishon, day one, we take it from the top.
Now we understand why yom ha'shemini, if one feels Sunday is the 8th day, that the weeks have bled into one another, that there is no break or fresh start, it is vayehi, it is sad indeed.
Use today to evaluate this past week, what went right and what went wrong, what can you be proud of and what are you ashamed about, what should continue and what needs a fresh start. Plan for the week ahead and make Sunday day one, don't just keep going and make it day 8.
Have a wonderful Shabbos!
