In this video, I travel to Samarkand — once home to a vibrant and deeply rooted Jewish community that dates back over 2,000 years. Today, only a small remnant remains.
From exploring the historic Gumbaz Synagogue to walking through the Jewish cemetery and visiting the local museum, I uncover what’s left of a community that once flourished along the Silk Road.
I also visit the famous Tomb of Daniel, a site with deep spiritual significance, and experience modern Samarkand, including the Silk Road development and Hilton Regency.
What happened to the Jews of Samarkand? Where did they go? And what still remains today?
This is the story.
