On August 1st 2012, 95,000 Jewish people from all walks of life gathered in the Metlife Center in New Jersey to celebrate the 12th completion of the seven and a half year cycle of the Talmud. The program is for each person to complete one page of Talmud a day, with everyone in the world doing the same page.
The media covered this event somewhat scornfully, portraying Talmud and it's students as entirely ultra Orthodox and Charedi fanatics. Each website tried to outdo the other with stock photos of Chassidim with the longest peyot ever seen.
The undertone was clear. This was the religious version of Comicon, where senile old men debate archaic and pointless ritual and ancient law.
The reality is quite different. Jews from all walks of life have found relevance and meaning in this historic and saintly work. Lessons to help live life ethically and morally. It's timeless and profound wisdom makes Talmud the heartbeat of the thinking Jew and the pulse of the eternal nation!
