Thirty Days Since the Horrific Massacre, 1,400 Memorial Candles Were Lit at the Western Wall

A moving ceremony took place on Monday November 6th 2023 at the Western Wall with the participation of dozens of bereaved families and the ‘Together We Will Win’ association, during which 1,400 memorial candles were lit in memory of the victims of the October 7th / Simchat Torah massacre. The ceremony was attended by war cabinet member, Minister Benny Gantz. Hundreds of worshippers from all across the country and various sectors of Israeli society joined the families in singing songs of comfort and consolation in memory of the victims, accompanied by singer Yaakov Shwekey. Psalms for the deceased were recited during the event by Rabbi Eitan Eisman, the grandfather of Noam and Yishai Slotki z”l, who fell in battle in the south; Yossi Rivlin, the brother of Aviad and Gideon z”l, who were murdered in the terrorist attack on the party in Re’im; and Amichai Resler, the father of Dvir z”l, a soldier in the Golani Brigade who fell in battle. May Hashem avenge their blood. The memorial prayer of Kaddish for the fallen and the victims was recited by Brigadier-General (res) Dedi Simhi, Israel Fire and Rescue Authority Commissioner, who lost his son Guy z”l, who fell in battle. Immediately afterward, Cantor Shai Abramson of the IDF recited the “El Maleh Rahamim” prayer. The Rabbi of the Western Wall and Holy Sites, Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, offered a prayer for the release of the captives and the missing, and afterwards, the Mayor of Jerusalem, Moshe Leon, recited a prayer for the well-being of the IDF soldiers and security forces. The Rabbi of the Western Wall, Rabbi Rabinowitz, offered words of strength to the bereaved families: “The 1,400 candles that we light here are not just memorial candles for each and every one of the Simchat Torah victims. They are also a reminder for all of us that these lights that have been extinguished – we will light them anew. This is our eternal mission: to kindle a new light from an extinguished one, to bring light to the darkest places. To believe that as long as the candle is burning, we can repair things. 1,400 candles will burn here as a memorial, for lives that were and are no more – each an entire world. When the days of war come to an end, we will take all of these candles and transform them into a great light – a new light.” הערב (ב’) התקיים מעמד מרגש ברחבת הכותל המערבי, בהשתתפות עשרות משפחות שכולות ועמותת ‘ביחד ננצח’, בו הודלקו 1,400 נרות נשמה לזכרם של הנרצחים בטבח הנורא בחג שמחת תורה, ה-7 באוקטובר. את המעמד כיבד בנוכחותו חבר קבינט המלחמה, השר בני גנץ. את המשפחות ליוו מאות מתפללים מכל רחבי הארץ וגווני החברה הישראלית, אשר שרו יחד שירי רגש ונחמה לזכרם של הנרצחים והנופלים בליווי של הזמר יעקב שוואקי. פרקי תהילים לזכר הנרצחים נאמרו במעמד על ידי הרב איתן אייזמן, סבא של נועם וישי סלוטקי ז״ל שנפלו בעת הלחימה בדרום; יוסי ריבלין, אח של אביעד וגדעון ז״ל שנרצחו במסיבה ברעים ועמיחי רסלר, אבא של דביר ז״ל, לוחם בחטיבת גולני שנפל במוצב בו שירת. השם יקום דמם. את תפילת הקדיש בשם משפחות הנופלים והנרצחים, אמר תא״ל במיל׳ דדי שמחי, נציב הכבאות והצלה לשעבר ששכל את בנו גיא הי”ד במהלך הלחימה, ומיד לאחריו נאמרה תפילת אל מלא רחמים ע”י החזן הראשי לצה״ל שי אברמסון. רב הכותל המערבי והמקומות הקדושים הרה”ג שמואל רבינוביץ שליט”א נשא תפילה להשבת החטופים והנעדרים, ולאחריו נשא ראש העיר ירושלים משה לאון תפילה לשלום חיילי צה”ל וכוחות הביטחון. רב הכותל המערבי נשא דברי חיזוק למשפחות השכולות: “אלף וארבע מאות הנרות שאנחנו מדליקים כאן הם לא רק מצבת זיכרון לכל אחד ואחת מחללי שמחת תורה, הם גם זיכרון לכולנו שאת האורות האלה שכבו – אנחנו עוד נדליק מחדש. שזו השליחות הנצחית שלנו, להדליק נר מנר, להביא את האור למקומות האפלים ביותר. להאמין שכל עוד הנר דולק אפשר לתקן. אלף וארבע מאות הנרות ידלקו כאן לזיכרון, על חיים שהיו ואינם. כל נר – עולם מלא. וכשיסתיימו ימי המלחמה ניקח את כל הנרות האלה ונהפוך אותם לאור גדול- אור חדש.”
