Six years ago today, when Kobe Bryant died, there was a palpable heaviness in the air.
For weeks, people carried something they couldn’t quite name.
And I remember realizing that as a Jew, I couldn’t let that feeling pass without asking: Why did this touch us so deeply? What was being stirred inside us?
It wasn’t simply that he was great at basketball. I think we were responding to something deeper. The confrontation with a kind of relentless discipline, a work ethic that forced us to look inward and ask what we ourselves are willing to work that hard for.
