That’s why it’s pointless to tell an addict, “But you’re destroying yourself!” Sensitive people experience existence so intensely that they long for relief from their own consciousness. The addiction arises from an attempt to destroy self-awareness, to escape the burden of being a separate self carrying pain, shame, fear, longing, memory, and identity. But no substance and no person can ultimately give the addict the relief they are searching for.
