Not too long ago I had an amazing experience. I was sitting near my Rebbe, Rabbi Yirmiyahu Katz, during the weekly Farbrengen that takes place in a quiet Shul in a corner of Borough Park. Lights dimmed, soft music plays in the background, and my Rebbe speaks. The scene looks like it was a page ripped out of an old storybook about the Baal Shem Tov in his early years. Each week everyone comes home feeling like the Rebbe spoke to them specifically and addressed their very concern they had walking in. I guess my worried look must have given it away because my Rebbe began to speak. “I know what you're thinking”, he said. “How can I change the craziness of the world? How can I stand by and watch the world get darker and darker every day? Everywhere I look, there are things that aren't ok!” “I want to tell you all, I had these thoughts too. These questions were on my mind many years ago, until one day my holy grandfather told me these wise words”. He warmly said "It's a jungle out there, and sometimes a jungle can be a very scary place." But then he shared a secret so I would not have to worry. "You don’t need to fix the whole giant jungle at once," my grandfather explained. "If you just light up your own little corner, that light will start to spread. It will travel further and further until it fills the entire world." That's when my Rebbe looked at us all and continued. “This is a massive secret that belongs to you, too. Every single person is an Olam Katan—a "miniature world." Think about that! Since a piece of the whole universe is tucked right inside your soul, the way you act matters everywhere. You are like a powerhouse of energy.” The more you work on your avodas Hashem and fill your day with mitzvos, the more you let Hashem’s light glow through you. It’s not just a "win" for you. The brighter you shine from your own corner, the more light you give to every person on the planet. Whenever things look dark or scary, we know exactly what to do. Shine Bright! Right where you are, use the light of the Torah to chase away the shadows. You have the power to turn the whole world into a place full of the Light of Hashem. My Rebbe’s grandfather's message hit my heart and I turned it into music right away. I composed this song to share that light, and I’m so proud to partner with the amazing TYH Yidden on this wonderful journey of lighting up the Jungle!
