Turn Friday into Erev Shabbos #55 - Turn Up the Fire
Description
Our parsha teaches that a Bris takes place on the 8th day, even if it is Shabbos. Why not do the Bris sooner? The gemara tells us the mother and father are not fully joyous in that first week as they must be separated and apart and so we wait until their joy has returned. The Ohr HaChaim gives a different explanation. He says until a baby has lived through a Shabbos, he doesn't have the strength, energy and fortitude to undergo a bris. The bris isn't until the 8th day because each baby boy needs to live through a Shabbos before they can enter the covenant of the Jewish people. Shabbos is not a time to turn off, it is a time to get energized. It isn't a time to deplete our strength but to return it. Shabbos gives us the fortitude and faith to get back to the weekday and to engage and conquer the world from a position of strength. Turn Friday into Erev Shabbos by resting, preparing and getting ready to be on for Shabbos and energized by it, instead of the opposite. Have a wonderful Shabbos!
