The Chafetz Chaim once said to Rav Shimon Schwab, “Do you know why I am a Cohen and you are not?” Reb Shimon said, ‘Because you father was a Cohen and your grandfather was a Cohen.” “Okay, so why was my grandfather a Cohen?’ Before waiting for Reb Shimon to answer, the Chafetz Chaim said, “I am a Kohen because three and half thousand years ago, at the scene of the Eigel HaZahav, the Golden Calf, when Moshe Rabeinu called out, “ ‘Mi L’Ashem Elai! ’ Who is for Hashem – To me!” My great-great-grandfather ran and heeded the call.
