Imagine the following: You make up to meet someone for a nice night out. You set a time and place. All day you anticipate with great excitement looking forward and counting down. When the time comes, you reach out and say, are you ready, let's go, only for the other person to respond, "is that tonight, oh, I am no where near ready, give me some time." How disheartening, disappointing and deflating. Sunday has Monday, Tuesday has Wednesday, Thursday has Friday. Shabbos came to Hashem and said what about me? Hashem said you have the Jewish people, you two are a pair. The Arizal (Sha'ar Hakavanos) writes that when Shabbos comes it looks to see if we are ready to be together. Did we also count down with excitement and anticipation or did we forget she is coming and fail to be prepared on time. The level of energy and enthusiasm we put into preparing for something reflects our love and connection to it.
