Candle-lighting for the first night of Chanukah took place this evening in the presence of the rabbi of the Western Wall and holy sites, Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz; the mayor of Jerusalem, Mr. Moshe Lion, MK May Golan, Director of the Western Wall Heritage Foundation Mordechai (Suli) Eliav and the general public. Rabbi of the Western Wall and holy sites, Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz: “Whoever makes their way to the modest plaza at the foot of the ancient stones and joins the tens of thousands who come to the Western Wall every day, sees that the Western Wall continues to be a place of connection and unity. They see a place where prayers of every kind are recited alongside each other. They see traditional prayers and those that spontaneously erupt from the heart. Everyone is attracted to the Western Wall and to the light that shines from it onto the nation and out to the entire world. This year again, we will light the menorah at the Western Wall Plaza every night of Chanukah. Rabbis and leaders, the public, people from Israel and from the Diaspora will stand together and be blessed by the light of the candles, the light of the Western Wall, the light of unity and humility, the light of belonging and solidarity which will continue to illuminate humanity for all of eternity.” Mayor of Jerusalem, Mr. Moshe Lion: “It is a huge privilege for me to light the first Chanukah candle here at the Western Wall, the remnant of our Temple, where the miracle happened, in Jerusalem, the capital of a free and independent Israel, and to bless – with great joy and wholeheartedly – ‘Who has granted us life, and sustained us, and brought us to this time.’ Chanukah is a festival of light, a festival of miracles, a festival of bravery. But the bravery of Chanukah is not that of soldiers or of physical courage. The bravery of the Hasmoneans is of learners in a beit midrash who decided to fight for the privilege of living and returning the glory of Israel’s monarchy.” Chanukah candle-lighting will take place every evening at 4:30pm (other than Friday, 29 Kislev at 3:30pm, and Sat night, 30 Kislev, at 7:30pm). The events will be broadcast live via the Kotel cameras on the Western Wall Heritage Foundation’s Facebook page and website. https://thekotel.org/ הערב (א’), התקיימה הדלקת נר ראשון של חנוכה ברחבת הכותל המערבי בסימן “ושם תודה נזבח”, במעמד: רב הכותל המערבי והמקומות הקדושים הרה”ג שמואל רבינוביץ שליט”א, ראש העיר ירושלים מר משה ליאון, ח”כ מאי גולן, מנכ”ל הקרן למורשת הכותל המערבי מרדכי (סולי) אליאב וקהל רחב. רב הכותל המערבי והמקומות הקדושים הרה”ג שמואל רבינוביץ שליט”א: “מי שעושים את הדרך אל הרחבה הצנועה שלמרגלות האבנים העתיקות ומצטרפים אל הרבבות הפוקדים את הכותל המערבי בכל יום – רואים את הכותל שממשיך להוות מקום של חיבור ושל אחדות. מקום שבו נישאות זו לצד זו תפילות מכל סוג ומין. תפילות מסורתיות ותפילות הבוקעות ממעמקי הלב. כולם נמשכים אל הכותל המערבי, ואל האור הבוקע ממנו לעם ולעולם כולו. גם השנה נדליק בכל לילה את החנוכייה ברחבת הכותל. יחדיו יעמדו רבנים ומנהיגים ואנשים מן הישוב, בני הארץ ובני התפוצות, ויתברכו באור הנרות, אורו של הכותל, אור של אחדות ושל ענווה, אור של שייכות ושל אחווה, אשר ימשיך להאיר לאנושות כולה עד עולם.” ראש העיר ירושלים, משה ליאון: “זכות גדולה עבורי להדליק נר ראשון של חנוכה, כאן בכותל המערבי, שריד בית מקדשנו, במקום בו נעשה הנס, בירושלים, בירת ישראל החופשית והעצמאית ולברך – בשמחה גדולה ובלב שלם: “שהחיינו וקיימנו והגענו לזמן הזה”. חג החנוכה הוא חג של אור, חג של ניסים, חג של גבורה. אלא שהגבורה של חנוכה איננה רק גבורה של חיילים, גבורה פיזית. גבורת החשמונאים, היא גבורה של חובשי בית המדרש, שהחליטו להילחם עבור הזכות לחיות בדרך ולהחזיר את עטרת מלכות ישראל ליושנה.” מעמד הדלקת נרות יתקיים בכל ערב מימי החנוכה בשעה 16:30 ברחבת הכותל וישודר בשידור חי באתר הכותל. (למעט- שישי כ”ט בכסלו בשעה 15.30 ומוצאי שבת ל’ בכסלו בשעה 19.30)
