On Lag Ba'omer, as today is referred to in Hebrew,  upwards of half a million Jews make their way to the tomb of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai in northern Israel to the  small town of Meron, located on the second to highest mountain in the land, and they spend the day celebrating with song and dance. Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai's rightful place is at the core of Jewish Mysticism and Kabbalah. This Song is a poem that was written about Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai by 16th Century Sephardic poet Rabbi Shimon Lavi. While the lyrics allude to many aspects of Bar Yochai's life and teachings, the theme of the song stresses the elevated level and special uniqueness of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. 'When did he pass away' you ask.Over 1800 years ago. 'What's so special about him' you question. 'Why does he hold such a special place in our hearts and calendars after so many centuries'?
