The essence of the talk was that the Jewish people counted the days, which meant they were very excited about the notion of receiving the Torah, even though the Torah was such an incredibly demanding regime. They would become slaves to God and the Torah. We discussed what is good about becoming a slave of Hashem and, of course, the answer is you take on these responsibilities and you become a bigger and a better person. We discussed the idea of constructive criticism, how helpful it is and how helpful it could be, and how all of Yiddishkeit constructively criticizes us and makes us better for it. We mentioned the idea that people hate religion, not because they disagree with religion, but because religion makes them feel bad. And in truth, if we could take the criticism, the best thing that we could do is live by the standards that religion sets, because it makes us better people, because the lifestyle is better and it also makes greater demands of us and forces us to dig deeper into ourselves.
