There is a spark of a holy Shabbos Jew inside each of us but all week long it gets covered by our connection to materialism, to technology, to work and to the weekday. Turning Friday into Erev Shabbos means working hard to remove the layers and barriers to allow the holy spark inside us to burn bright on Shabbos.
Our parsha tells us ach es shabsosai tishmoru, just observe my Shabbos. The Sefas Emes says how do you prepare for Shabbos. When the Jewish people conquer Midyan and acquire their utensils, they require kashering. The pasuk says, ach es ha'zahav v'es ha'kasef and the rabbis learn the word ach teaches that at the time of kashering, before immersing the utensil in boiling water one must remove any rust, barrier or label. Says the Sefas Emes, you see that the word ach teaches we must remove barriers and pesoles. So too when it comes to Shabbos - ach es shabsosai tishmoru, before entering the holiness of Shabbos we have to remove all the gook, residue and barriers.
