In a coordinated operation between the NYPD and Shomrim, three suspects were arrested after being caught in the middle of a street robbery scheme that used fake kindness to steal valuable jewelry.
Shomrim had received several reports about a group targeting elderly people, women, and individuals who appeared wealthy. The suspects pretended to be friendly tourists or lost visitors. They approached people on the street asking for directions to places like gas stations or luxury restaurants.
Once the person stopped to help, one of the suspects would suddenly hug the victim or pat their shoulder. During that physical contact, the suspect would quietly snatch a gold chain or bracelet from the victim without them noticing right away. Then, to distract the victim and cover up the theft, they would hand over a cheap, fake piece of jewelry pretending it was a thank-you gift.
Many victims only realized what happened after the suspects had already vanished away. In some cases, the suspects also pretended they had no money and offered to trade their fake “expensive” jewelry for cash, tricking people further.
Earlier today, a Shomrim volunteer on patrol spotted individuals who matched the suspects’ description. They were acting suspiciously and constantly looking behind them. Additional volunteers joined the patrol and began quietly following from a distance.
The suspects were then seen approaching another victim. Shomrim volunteers witnessed the robbery happen in real time from the fake question to the hug to the theft and immediately alerted the NYPD.
Officers responded within moments, arriving before the suspects could leave the area. All three were taken into custody at the scene. Stolen jewelry was found on them and returned to the victim.
Thanks to the sharp eyes of Shomrim and the quick response by the NYPD, a group of active street robbers was caught in the act before they could target more people.
Authorities urge the public to stay alert and cautious, especially when approached by strangers trying to get close or offering random gifts. Anyone who may have experienced a similar robbery is encouraged to contact Shomrim and the NYPD immediately.
