Everyone’s heard the expression “trophy wife.” It’s a crass phrase, but we all know what it means, using a spouse as a badge for social status. We recognize that as shallow. But have you ever heard of a trophy child? Nobody talks about that. And I think the reason is because it’s become so normalized. Of course my child owes it to me not to embarrass me. Of course my child is part of my image-maintenance team. That’s how many parents think. The truth is, it’s very human to have those thoughts. Our egos crave recognition and positive attention, and we would even use our own children for that. But being a parent means stopping ourselves and saying: I can’t do that to this child. Because when I use my child to meet my emotional needs, I’m not giving to them — I’m taking from them. Instead of giving them a strong sense of self, I’m taking my sense of self from them.
