What if the way you speak on Shabbos could transform your entire life?
In this week’s Turn Friday Into Erev Shabbos, Rabbi Efrem Goldberg shares a powerful teaching for Shabbos HaGadol:
Shabbos is a time to elevate our speech.
The Navi tells us “Daber Davar” — to honor Shabbos through the way we speak. But this isn’t just about avoiding gossip or negativity. It’s about something much deeper.
Speech comes from the neshama.
When Hashem created us, “Vayehi ha’adam l’nefesh chaya” — Onkelos translates: “Ruach Memalela” — the spirit of speech. Our ability to speak is what makes us human.
And on Shabbos, we receive a neshama yeseira — an elevated soul. Which means our speech has even greater power.
Rav Avraham Schorr explains that galus is a corruption of speech — Peh Ra (an evil mouth).
But geulah — especially Pesach — is Peh Sach — a mouth that speaks freely, purely, and with purpose.
Shabbos HaGadol is the moment to grow up.
Children speak impulsively.
Adults speak intentionally.
This Shabbos, choose your words carefully.
Speak calmly. Speak gently. Speak meaningfully.
Use your speech to elevate, not to tear down.
Because the way you speak on Shabbos
is the way your soul is revealed.
Turn your Friday into Erev Shabbos —
and let your words become כלי קודש.
