Thousands of Jews in Israel and around the world, members of the Ashkenazi communities, began reciting Selichot on Saturday night, in preparation for Rosh Hashanah. In doing so, they joined the members of the Mizrahi community who have been reciting Selichot since the beginning of the month of Elul, about three weeks ago. רבבות יהודים בארץ ובעולם, בני קהילות אשכנז, התחילו אמש הלילה (ראשון) באמירת "סליחות" לקראת ראש השנה. בכך הצטרפ�� אל בני עדות המזרח, הנוהגים כן כבר מתחילת חודש אלול לפני כשלושה שבועות. ערב הסליחות הגדול בירושלים מתקיים בבנייני האומה בהובלת הזמר-חזן יצחק מאיר. מאיר עובר לפני התיבה כבר 14 שנים ברציפות. זו השנה השנייה שבה "בנייני האומה" הופכים לבית כנסת ענק. הסליחות נאמרות באשמורת הבוקר בחודש אלול ובעשרת ימי תשובה, ומורכבות מ'שלוש עשרה מידות', פיוטים ופסוקים, שתוכנם העיקרי הוא בקשת סליחה מהשם ותפילה למחילת חטאים.
